Please he was more than all this. He was a Mathematician and was an assistant professor and a thinking man. I first heard of him in one of the intellectual circles, his manifesto was spoken of in the same conversation as the Marxist manifesto- they had more than the word in common, both the text were rooted in the social conditions that called for action.

(and being the action hero that I am, I couldn’t help gravitate towards what he stood for ) As a mathematician and an academic he could possibly be one of those working on binary mathematics or early designs of latest wedding cars. Something seminal and sterling. He could easily pass off as one of those calm quiet withdrawn professors who you bump into in your college corridors.

But behind that calm exterior remained a man deeply pained and deeply moved by how things were shaping.

Something similar too was reported in a local newspaper, where a middle aged man went tired of being mugged and troubled everyday, bought a pistol and shot dead his tormentors just at the door of his limo bus hire. A warning here- do not get mislead by those who make a noise merely for the sake of it: the unsteady teen who carries a gun to perpetrate a massacre, or the disillusioned fanatic who sets himself on fire on the street corner. Rebel without a cause is only nice on silver screen. The genuine ones almost always have a poignant past- a story to tell and a reason that is strong enough to convince. If only we hear.

I say we do have a lot in common with such people, only we don’t have the guts to go ahead and implement our convictions. To act out what we believe cause out need to self preserve stops us from becoming failures in the eyes of the society and we are content being couch based commentators.

No doubt the Taj is a stunning affair visually and is of immense historical importance but at times feel we tend to do less justice ( as Indians) to other monuments that are equally important if not less beautiful, it feels like no matter you have maserati or gallardo in your garage ppl talk about you only for your vintage limo rolls royce.

And then Bollowood will be different altogether.

I’m talking in the context of the ITES sector: the one that encompasses BPOs and call centers and KPOs. The problem for these people is all the more acute for the following reasons:

1. The people working in call centers know English enough only to take calls. They can sell over the phone and provide customer service in passable English but can not on an average write a single correct paragraph in the language. They don’t have to because it was not necessary for them to get the jobs. Neither does the environment train and equips themselves with skills that can be of any use in a non call center environment. They teach you about Excel sheet but not about driving a limo bus .They know all about the Voice over internet protocol and Routing calls and predictive dialer but what use are these skills sets in a Non call center environment. I’ve spoken to a whole team that knows nothing else than this- where will they find a job now?
2. The people working in call centers have for quite some time now gotten used to the kind of salaries that other industries would not think of paying for the same skill sets. Imagine taking 20k for attending calls- that’s more than what a receptionist can earn. I’ve seen fellows take out dates in wedding limo style vehicles with their first salaries to pubs. They were paid these obscene amounts because the client still found it feasible. Now having spoilt their husbandry with that kind of income they can’t simply work for more realistic figures- even if they do manage to get the jobs. 3. The other most important aspect of their un- suitability for other conventional jobs is their culture. To begin with there has always been a divide between the conventional sectors and the new style of BPO operations- in a BPO environment your certain of the month end pay package and so when you don’t see it happen you can actually create quite a scene. In a conventional environment like my last job of working in surrey limo patience is the only way out. One needs to value the job enough to keep quite and let things happen. In a BPO environment, thanks to the Americans, things happen real fast. There are ‘turn around’ times in hours- can you imagine that from conventional sectors like mDeals. The friends that I have known found it extremely difficult to stick beyond 2 months after leaving their BPOs in a conventional environment. I am forced to see the current crop of leftist as people who will stall foreign investment, block a project like Singur, indulge in trade unionism etc etc. I’ve hardly heard stories of their work with the poor. Are there no more poor left in the far flung reaches of India or has it become unfashionable for the left to take up their cause now?  Left politics now is only fashionable in places like JNU, in gatherings where people talk about changes- revolutionary changes and equal opportunities for all. Only nothing seems to come of it. In recent times I don’t recollect one single left gathering that rallied selflessly to any cause. There is always infighting and confusion. What is the left agenda now?..and is it relevant actually?

Does the left faction actually have something to offer other than protests? As long as there are people there will be differences, there are people going around in a Middlesex limo and there are those that can’t afford a cycle. Social welfare is not about snatching away a car from the rich because the poor doesn’t have it- it should be more than that I suppose. Merely maintaining a low profile and preaching mediocrity should not be the only left goal. I personally would love to see a left government given full power- only that won’t happen. (Except in Kerala and maybe Bengal) Because then we might be able to see the extent to which they can bring about change. Pity though the left always bungles the opportunity that comes their way in the last moment. I would like to see what the left does if given power apart from driving in their own personal limos: will it be true to the ideals of martyrs like Charu Majumdar or will it satisfy itself with just making some noise at the national level.

Maybe this election will put my doubts to rest. For the moment my web development calls and its much more pressing than who comes to power- after all I still will have to go to the same job and ride the same Metro. That’s why I and many like me are so far away from people like Charu Majumdar and sadly but truly away from limo hampshire as well .

While the rich ones with the correct connection end up in Canada, I’v personally know more than half a dozen militants who migrated to Canada and lead a cozy life- some of them own businesses and go around in middlesex limos, while the majority languishes in refugee camps.

Almost every Indian was glued to their TV sets when A.R. Rahman received his oscar and gave the following acceptance speech:

“I just want to thank again the whole crew of Slumdog Millionaire, especially Danny Boyle for giving such a great opportunity. And the whole, all the people from Mumbai. The essence of the film which is about optimism and the power of hope in the lives, and all my life I had a choice of hate and love. I chose love and I’m here. God bless.”

Wow! Now that the movie has won so many oscars the backlash has already begun. There are so many blogs about people ranting out their anger at the director for showing only one side of India – The poor side. Hello people wake up! The film is about a slumdog Millionaire and if that doesn’t show the slums of Dharavi then what will?

The director has shown just a glimpse of the real poverty of India. The Slum, The Society, The Police, The reality television-show ethics, the religious fanatic, the sensationalized TV show anchor. India is just not this. It’s all this and MORE!

Slumdog was initially intended as a DVD release when Warner International went bankrupt but thanks to Fox Searchlight it’s now an Oscar Icon!

The film is an emotional account of a boy who wants to become a millionaire on a television game show, in the process finding the love of his life. Boyle has beautifully depicted the society that revolves around survival of the fittest and where betrayal and greed are second nature to everyone!

The story is about Jamal, a poor but mischievous boy who along with his older brother Salim keep getting in and out of scrapes. Their lives change suddenly when their mother is killed viciously in communal riots. Orphaned and alone they become the “slumdogs” of the streets of Mumbai. Latika, a feisty yound girl befriends them and soon they are inseparable and they become the three musketeers. They fight the odds of life together.

The twist is when Jamal appears on India’s version of the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Interestingly, he finds that he’s winning more prize money then he ever expected. Alarmed at how a “slumdog” who has no formal education learn the answers to these questions? The suspicions give rise to new problems for Jamal.

The film is an emotional rollercoaster ride. The biggest rider is romance in a world where socio, economic and political issues are never at bay. The young actors have done their job superbly well but it is Boyle’s dramatic expertise and his tact of displaying the heat, sweat and street life of Mumbai that decorates Slumdog Millionaire into a moving cinematic experience.

And to be honest , what best was the ride to Oscars for all the stars of the movie, this movie has been going around the globe and winning about everything by striking a chord with the judges world over, so to me the fairy tail ride of limo bus ride to the oscars is much well deserved by the little stars of the movie.
