The Unabomber case
Somewhere in 1978 a man by the name of Theodre Kaczynski sent 16 bombs to targets in his cheap limo hire including universities and airlines, killing three people and injuring 23. He wasn’t a mad man, nor was he earning anything by doing so and yeah he wasn’t one of those jerks who call themselves terrorists.
Please he was more than all this. He was a Mathematician and was an assistant professor and a thinking man. Quite popular in his academic circle but not the flashysurrey limohiring convention hopping scholar- he was more grounded (I don’t condone what he did but I am merely trying to post that he was not a nutcase and had the college education and training to see things clear and logically- clear enough for him to heap punishment)
I first heard of him in one of the intellectual circles, his manifesto was spoken of in the same conversation as the Marxist manifesto- they had more than the word in common, both the text were rooted in the social conditions that called for action.
(and being the action hero that I am, I couldn’t help gravitate towards what he stood for ) As a mathematician and an academic he could possibly be one of those working on binary mathematics or early designs of latest wedding cars. Something seminal and sterling. He could easily pass off as one of those calm quiet withdrawn professors who you bump into in your college corridors.
But behind that calm exterior remained a man deeply pained and deeply moved by how things were shaping.
Something similar too was reported in a local newspaper, where a middle aged man went tired of being mugged and troubled everyday, bought a pistol and shot dead his tormentors just at the door of his limo bus hire. Day in and day out I’m sure if we stop to notice we come across many such examples of ordinary men and women taking things in their own hands. No they are not desperadoes nor are they mentally ill. They are just ordinary folk who have had enough of the unchanging environment and decide to take things in their hands to make a difference.
Kaczynski graduated from Harvard in 1962 and subsequently attended the Michigan University where he earned a masters and a PhD in mathematics so much for an education to walk with pride in his limo. Kaczynski’s specialty was a branch of complex analysis known as geometric function theory- so now you get it right he was the ‘baap’ of real complex stuff, much more than web development (if you think that’s complex that is ) Bright chap.
Why would he do such a stupid thing as to bomb universities?
There the ones that cant take life the way it is any more and decide to end it through suicide and then there are those that try to make a change at the cost of their own lives- the Unabomber was of the latter category. With a strong conviction that the American version of capitalism was not the right way to go, people need jobs and education, not just pretty Kaczinski made a decision- to draw attention through a blast when his manifesto went un- heeded.
A warning here- do not get mislead by those who make a noise merely for the sake of it: the unsteady teen who carries a gun to perpetrate a massacre, or the disillusioned fanatic who sets himself on fire on the street corner. Rebel without a cause is only nice on silver screen. The genuine ones almost always have a poignant past- a story to tell and a reason that is strong enough to convince. If only we hear.
I say we do have a lot in common with such people, only we don’t have the guts to go ahead and implement our convictions. To act out what we believe cause out need to self preserve stops us from becoming failures in the eyes of the society and we are content being couch based commentators.
